Hundreds of government opponents, including prisoners of conscience, were detained without charge or trial. Political detainees included leaders and members of political parties, journalists, human rights activists, and trade unionists. The majority of prisoners arrested and held in secret detention centers.

Since January 2018, several anti-government demonstrations and peaceful marches took place in several towns including capital city of Sudan Khartoum, Medani, and Sinja. Sudanese from virtually all sectors of society, from northern Sudan, Darfur, the war-torn South Blue Nile and South Kordofan states, suffered human rights violations as the authorities continued to suppress political opposition.

The National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) are using the political detainees as hostages to prevent the Sudanese opposition from carrying out protests against the government. “The political detainees from the left parties would be released if their parties stop demonstrations and behave!”, the NISS director Salah Gosh said in a statement published on 20 February 2018 by “Alintibaha” Sudanese daily newspaper.

The Sudan Human Rights Network (SHRN) is deeply concerned by ongoing widespread and gross human rights violations and abuses, and arbitrary detention by Sudanese authorities of peaceful civil society party members, tribes’ leaders, and activists. More than 100 remained behind bars for several months, among them; Sudanese Congress Party (SCP) President Omer Yusuf Al-Digair, Secretary General of the Communist Party of Sudan (CPS) Mohammed Mukhtar Al-Khateeb, and notably the case of Sakharov Prize laureate human rights defender, Salih Mahmoud Osman.

SHRN condemns the gross human rights violations in Sudan and recommends that the UN Commission on Human Rights assign human rights field officers to monitor the human rights situation. If strict measure are not taken, we are concerned that government forces will continue to use excessive force against protesters and to arbitrarily detain those who participate in them as they have done repeatedly.

We call on the international community – and particularly the UN Human Rights Council – to take action to end the widespread human rights abuses being perpetrated in Sudan, and to:

Express concern at the arrest and continuing of detention of prisoners of conscious

Urge the Sudanese authorities to immediately and unconditionally release prisoners of conscious

Request assurances that prisoners of conscious are being humanly treated, that they have immediate and regular access to their families, lawyers, and any necessary medical attention.

Sudan Human Rights Network

For more information, please contact:

info@sudanhumanrights.org

List of detainees held without charge or trial in Sudan as of 23 March 2018:

Kober prison: Detainees from Adeela, Abu Karenka, Kelakle, Abu Slama localities (State of East Darfur), since July- August 2017 with no valid charges.

Fadl Alla Ahmed Idris

Imad Ahmed Ibrahim

Faiz Mohamed Ahmed Ismail

Ahmed Adam Beraima

Alhadi Mohamed Ali Kailani

Abdelhadi Ibrahim Mohamed Yusuf

Ahmed Abaker Adam Mohamed

Ahmed Adam Hasballa Jadalla

Mohamed Hussain Mohamed

Jabir Adam Bakheet

Yaqoub Mohamed Yusuf Adam

Abdalla Mohamed Ahmed Haroun

Hashim Noureldin Mahmoud AS’Shareef

Adam Mohamed Ali Hamed

Mohamed Abdelkareem Adam Mohamed

Mu’alla Ali Mu’alla Humaidan

Masbool Adam Hassan

Mustafa Hamed

Mohamed Mahmoud Abdelrahman Adam

Mohamed Mahmoud Adam

Siddiq Hamed Salman

Murjab Ahmed Adam

Hassan Elsayer Bilal

Mohamed Siddiq Ali

Salim Ahmed Ali Hussain

Hammid Ahmed Almardi Khamjan

Jumaa Abdelghani Jumaa

Hammad Terab Adam

Ahmed Hammad Aabed

Almahi Yusuf Adam

Hussain Mohamed Ali

Muhakar Hassan Mohamed

Ibrahim Adam Ahmed

Alsadiq Saeed

Musbal Adam Ahmed

Musa Yusuf Zakariya

Musa Babikir AbdelKareem

Ibrahim Abdalla Ismail

Almukashfe Mohamed Ahmed

Port Sudan prison: Detainees from Adeela, Abu Karenka, Kelakle, Abu Slama localities (State of East Darfur), since July- August 2017 with no valid charges.

Suliman Jadkareem Yusuf

Hamid Musa Hamid

Hamid Hammad Eid

Yusuf Hammad Eid

Saleh Abdalla Hamid

Suliman Bakheet Abdalla

Eisa Madeeni Adam

Tumsah Ibrahim Mohamed

Eid Abdalla Hamed

Mohamed Musa Hamed

Ahmed Mu’alla Hammad

Abdo Ahmed Mohamed Nour

Ali Adam Ali Mohamed

Yusuf Mohamed Abuelgasim

Beraima Jadkareem

Ahmed Mohamed Lazim

Ali Mohamed Nasur

Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed Adam

Abdelrahman Ahmed Hamed

Adam Abdalla Ahmed Rakza

Fat’hi Ahmed Yusuf

Third group: Detainees since January 2018

Galal Mustafa – Sudanese Congress Party and Vice Chairman of the Committee for solidarity with the Sudanese Political prisoners, date of arrest 6th.
