Subject: Gross Human Rights Violations in Sudan

Dear Senator (or Representative) last name:

I am writing to you regarding the deeply concerning human rights situation in Sudan. More than 40 people are reported to have been killed since the wave of protests against the government was started on December 19, 2018 in many cities around Sudan.

I am primarily concerned about the violent suppression by Sudanese Government forces of citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and protest. These forces, including Intelligence Service, Police, and Army, have brutally beaten peaceful protestors with sticks and batons, fired tear gas, and used live ammunition to disperse protests.

According to Sudanese interior minister, Mr. Ahmed Bilal Osman, over 800 hundred protesters are in custody. Those activists remain detained incommunicado, and among them more than 50 Darfuri university students mainly targeted; concerns about their safety are rising among their families, neighborhoods, and friends.

Many credible human rights reports documented that government forces have attacked civilians in west and south regions of Sudan, specifically in Darfur, Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile on several occasions during the past year.

I am deeply concerned by the ongoing widespread and gross human rights violations and abuses, and arbitrary detention by Sudanese authorities of peaceful demonstrators, civil society party members, and activists.

Therefore, I urge the US Congress to call on the Sudanese Government to immediately stop their atrocities and violent crackdown on these peaceful protests, stop their unjustified, arbitrary arrests of peaceful demonstrators, and release all political detainees.

Thank you for your consideration of this humanitarian matter to call on the Sudanese authorities to stop their violation of human rights and using forces on demonstrators who are peacefully expressing their rights to speak out.

Sincerely,
