Urgent Action: Yasir Alsir Ali, January 6, 2019 – PDF

Yasir Alsir Ali, a peaceful protester arrested while still recovering from a life-threatening gunshot wound

Age: 57

Date of Arrest: Saturday, 5 January 2019

Where was he arrested: From his residence in the city of Omdurman, Sudan

Place of detention: Unknown

Legal basis or reasons for the arrest: None was given.

An unprecedented incident occurred on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at about 12:30 o’clock in the afternoon in Omdurman, Sudan. Sudanese National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) raided the residence of Mr. Yasir Alsir Ali.  Mr. Ali was staying in bed recovering from a life-threatening gunshot wound, where the bullet is still embedded inside his lung.

Mr. Ali was shot in the back at a peaceful protest, December 25, 2018, in downtown Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan. He has been rushed to Fedail Hospital in Khartoum where he underwent surgery to stop the bleeding.

This is an unlawful assault, and there is grave concern for the safety of Mr. Ali, who is believed to be held incommunicado in NISS detention centers. There are also fears that security agents may try to attempt to impose a surgery without the full, free and informed consent of Mr. Ali.

  • Sudan Human Rights Network (SHRN) is deeply concerned for the safety and well-being of Mr. Yasir Alsir Ali, and demands that NISS to unconditionally release him.
