Humanitarian Situation in Khartoum 8 October 2023 – PDF

Sudan Human Rights Network (SHRN) expresses deep concern over the heinous crimes occurring in the regions of Al’ilafoun, Jebel Awliya, and various neighborhoods in the capital, Khartoum.

In the Al’ilafoun area, east of the Nile, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) invaded the city, resulting in numerous casualties and significant infrastructure destruction. They engaged in the worst forms of torture, intimidation, provocation, and humiliation, including the arrest of children, rape of women, and sexual violence, as reported by the Al’ilafoun Resistance Committees.

In Jebel Awliya, the RSF shelled neighborhoods and markets with drones, leading to the death of 40 citizens and numerous injuries. Artillery exchanges occurred between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in residential areas. These actions represent a blatant violation of human rights and international humanitarian laws.

SHRN demands an immediate cessation of all military operations in civilian areas. SHRN strongly condemns the deliberate disruption of electricity and telecommunication services, which hinders the provision of necessary aid and healthcare to the injured and the monitoring of conditions in these areas.

SHRN calls on the international community to pressure the warring parties to establish safe corridors for civilians under attack and to provide humanitarian assistance to citizens and detainees, including the immediate release of detainees.

SHRN urges the provision of necessary resources and facilities for hospitals and healthcare facilities, as healthcare should be accessible to every citizen regardless of political circumstances.

SHRN appeals to the international community, humanitarian organizations, the Red Cross, and the Red Crescent to urgently intervene to halt these hostile acts and provide humanitarian assistance to the victims. Justice must be served, and those responsible for these catastrophic events must be held accountable.

SHRN acknowledges the suffering of citizens and calls for an immediate ceasefire, peace, stability in the country, and the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all.
