Humanitarian Situation October 2, 2023 – PDF

Sudan Human Rights Network (SHRN) condemns the ongoing exchange of artillery and aerial shelling between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), resulting in civilian casualties.

Indiscriminate shelling from both sides has led to the deaths of hundreds, including civilians attempting to flee Khartoum to safer areas. Hostilities against civilians in Zalingei in Central Darfur, Wad Ashana, an area between the White Nile and North Kordofan States, continue, indicating an expansion of conflict zones.

Civilians must be protected under international humanitarian law from all forms of violence and mistreatment, including killing, arrest, and torture.

SHRN calls on the U.N. Human Rights Council and the international humanitarian community to exert pressure on the warring parties to stop the war.

SHRN urges SAF and RSF for a temporary ceasefire followed by a permanent end to the war

SHRN demands the establishment of a commission for a fair investigation into these atrocities to hold the perpetrators accountable.
