Joint Statement of Sudanese and International Civil Society Organizations

After 18 months of conflict, the situation has deteriorated significantly, with civilians in regions like Darfur, Al Gezira, Khartoum, and Kordufan, among other areas of Sudan, facing constant threats to their lives and left trapped with no safe passage or protected zones. Due to institutional impunity, a lack of media coverage, widespread misinformation, and deliberate disinformation, Sudanese civilians’ suffering remains grossly overlooked, leading to a climate that allows further aggravation of these violations.

Dear Mr. Grandi, We are writing on behalf of the Coordination of Sudanese Refugees in Ethiopia, Amhara Region, to bring to your urgent attention the dire situation of Sudanese refugees stranded in the Olalla Forest in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. The plight of these 6,880 refugees, which includes 2,135 children, is rapidly deteriorating due to the ongoing conflict between the Ethiopian Army and the Fano militia.

Since February 2, 2024, several states have experienced fluctuations or complete interruption of internet and communication services amid ongoing clashes between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces for the past ten months. This situation violates international humanitarian law and directly violates Article 15 (b) of the International Covenant on Civil, Cultural, Political, and Social Rights. The Army and the Rapid Support Forces have been trading accusations regarding the responsibility for these cuts.
